Review: The word is out, EBTG are back. The long-serving combination of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt have moved through many phases, from their exquisite indie pop era of the 80s to the chart-topping club dalliances and premier league remixes of the 90s. Now they return with a fresh sound on this, their eleventh album, which feels wholly contemporary as well as carrying on their instinct for heart-rending songwriting, all led by Thorn's unmistakable croon. Lead single 'Nothing Left To Lose' sets the tone with a strident, bass-heavy beat that certainly doesn't try to recreate past glories, and it's still a powerful song first and foremost. This revamped approach yields an abundance of magic moments across the whole of Fuse, a stellar return from long time treasures of British independent music.

Review: "In Rainbows", Radiohead's seventh album, finally gets a physical release! It's one thing downloading this landmark album, but to actually hold this is something special. Not only do you get increased sound quality, but you also get the amazing artwork from Stanley Donwood. This album includes "Nude", a live favourite for many years that was originally written during the "OK Computer" sessions. More minimal that their "Kid A" period, "In Rainbows" does something that very few albums have done - its sound is distinct from previous Radiohead albums, but is still clearly Radiohead. Hail to the kings, they are back on top form.

Review: American indie rock band the National rach their ninth studio album with First Two Pages of Frankenstein. It makes the start of a new chapter for the hugely popular outfit as they anchor their sounds in evocative melodies and lyrical narratives that are complex and enthralling throughout. The band produced the record at Long Pond Studios in New York with some high-level guests including Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers and Sufjan Stevens. It comes after busy touring years, two back-to-back albums and a period of creative block but suggests that was very much gotten over as it brings plenty of invention and originality.

Review: Today & Tomorrow is yet another superb album from the Sault collective headed up by Dean Josiah Cover AKA Info. Not much else is known about them but there sure is a hell of a lot of music to get stuck into. This album was dropped as one of five last year - alongside 11, AIIR, Earth and Untitled (God)) - all for free and all on the same day. That is a mad thing to do and you might think they can't all be good albums, but they are. This is another lo-fi soul masterpiece from one of the best bands of our time.

Review: The last ten years have seen no shortage of bands with their delay pedals set to stun intent on capturing an aura of dreamlike radiance. Yet Texas 'pop-noir' troupe Cigarettes After Sex are no ordinary shoegazers, for a variety of reasons - frontman Greg Gonzalez' androgynous and dulcet tones may be part of the appeal, yet moreover it's the quality of the songwriting here, which never falls prey to the style-over-substance traps of their peers. Indeed, this debut is more than enough to justify the considerable hype around this outfit, being a collection of ditties as sultry as they are atmopsheric.

Review: The long-awaited, much anticipated, eleventh full-length from thrash metal titans, Metallica, will serve as their first full-length since 2016's underrated, Hardwired To Self-Destruct, and continues the damage (inc.) control mission the band have been on ever since, St. Anger soured fan palettes and expectation almost two full decades ago. While, Death Magnetic, played it somewhat safe, there's been a notable element of soul-searching over the last number of years, in an effort to recapture the breakneck thrash fury that originally elevated the Metallica brand to genre staples. From the blistering, lead single, 'Lux aeterna', alone, it's evident that James Hetfield and co have regrouped at the source (their 1982 debut, Kill 'Em All), to reimagine their dynamic metallic machinations as the seasoned veterans they've effortlessly moulded into; promising their purest, most revitalised return to form yet. Luckily, '72 Seasons', won't take as long as its cryptic title to materialise.

From the cover photography to every single tune, this is bedded in the popular consciousness like few other records, and so of course it deserves a monumental tribute 50 years after its initial release. Review: Melanie Martinez has achieved a lot since breaking through in 2015 with her debut album CRY BABY. 2019's K-12 was a landmark project for the then-24-year-old singer-songwriter, and now she returns with her bold, highly anticipated follow-up, PORTALS. With a savvy handle on teasing her projects through her socials, Martinez has drawn her fans into the world of this new album around themes of rebirth, growing embryos and eggs incubating in forests. Ambitious and rigorous in its 360 presentation, this is another step on for one of the most intriguing artists of her generation - the huge impact of the release is absolutely guaranteed.

Review: Australian indie rockers The Church are an example of a band who have continued on strong ever since their inception, releasing a new album every few years or so since their debut in 1980. New single 'The Hypnogogue' is a gothic spectacle for all the somnambulists out there. Laying down a sinister group of layered guitar arps and an off-the-wall music video to boot, we're more than excited to find out what this sinister new iteration of the band's vision promises for the future.

Review: This 20th Anniversary reissue of the The White Stripes' Elephant will make you roar once more. Jack and Meg White's raw and minimalist garage rock, which they've been making since 1997, is by now a staple of the international rock market identity - and of course, the blinding hits 'Seven Nation Army', 'I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself' and 'The Hardest Button To Button' all feature on their debut here. Celebrating the now cemented legacy of a wholly original duo, this anniversary edition includes a bonus disc of alternative tracks, some of which come in a format of much import, mono. And that's not to mention a string of covers and rarities. It also comes in a deluxe bookback edition, with liner notes by Jack White himself!

Review: The Lemonheads' Come On Feel The Lemonheads is a rejuvenatory album of power-pop goodness and this double LP/CD reissue of the album - their sixth, from 1993 - will certainly cleanse your bad vibes once more. Led by Evan Dando, The Lemonheads have been making catchy, easygoing, melodicentric hits since the late 80s. 'Into Your Arms', 'It's About Time' and 'Big Gay Heart' all feature, not to mention guest appearances by Belinda Carlisle and Rick James - it's a stew that contributed readily to its stonking commercial success. This reissue celebrates the album's 30th anniversary, and includes a bonus disc of alternative/acoustic tracks, covers and curiosities. It also comes in a deluxe bookback edition with liner notes by Dando himself.

Review: Depeche Mode's latest album Memento Mori is one that has been madly anticipated by fans. The record - which comes on wax and in a lovely embossed sleeve here - centres on the mood of grief after the passing of the band's founding member Andrew "Fletch" Fletcher, this is the first LP by a Depeche Mode made up of only two remaining members: Dave Gahan and Martin Gore. The band's progression in their latest years have heard them move into darker, peakier, sadder and more industrial themes, as they make do with a future-present that wasn't promised to them in the 80s, while drawing on deathly topoi and nodding to Ingmar Bergman.

Review: When The Clash rolled into Passaic, New Jersey in March 1980, they were fully hitting their stride. They'd released their instant classic London Calling in December the year before and cracked the US top 30, so they hit Stateside with some swing in their stride, and it shows on this fantastic document of one of the breakthrough US gigs. Of course the classics spill out of this collection, from 'London Calling' and 'Guns Of Brixton' to 'I Fought The Law' and their cover of Junior Murvin's 'Police & Thieves', all delivered by a band firing on all cylinders.

Review: Several new reissues of Current 93's music come via Cashen's Gap, the home imprint of said industrial supergroup - which infamously includes musical iconoclast David Tibet among its ranks. Night At The Four Winds Bar Maldoror is one of their albums, released in 2023 - it's a complete reworking of their 1986 album Live At Bar Maldoror, with the original album playing forwards in the right-hand channel and backwards in the left-hand channel. Its 15 tracks explore themes of death, apocalypse and transcendence, using a mix of industrial, folk and ambient sounds. Don't miss it, as it's one of the band's many curiosities, and is a star example of what made the band so lauded as among Britain's weirdest acts in the 80s and 90s.

Truly, audiophilia is real, and fans of Floyd are among the most avid audiophiles out there; several specially mixed versions of the album feature here, including one specifically made for Dolby Atmos, and another, the Quad mix, made for systems made up of exactly four speakers. Review: Black Country, New Road marks a new chapter as a six piece with this new album of previously unreleased music. It was recorded by therm at the Bush Hall venue in London, a legendary place where they played six special shows at the end of last year. This follows a busy and sold out run of shows and the success of 'Ants From Up There' as Lewis Evans, May Kershaw, Georgia Ellery, Luke Mark, Tyler Hyde and Charlie Wayne find some of their highest nights. Critical and fan praise followed them everywhere last year and that will only continue with this, we sense.

Review: Anyone who has watched the documentary 'The Sound Of Progress' will know how truly bonkers Current 93 were, and presumably still are. The British experimental group are currently in the process of either reissuing or reinterpreting several of their former LPs and live shows - one of these being Great Aleph Lies Dreaming. This LP is a so-called "ReDreaming" of their 2009 album Aleph At Hallucinatory Mountain, and by and large contains an increasingly weird and effected sound compared to the more straightforward original - in turn drew on tropes ranging from the apocalypse to doom metal and stoner rock.

Review: A work that surely needs little to no introduction, 'Repeater', was the seminal debut full-length from post-hardcore visionaries, Fugazi. From the demise of emo pioneers, Rites Of Spring, and hardcore punk godfathers, Minor Threat, came the enigmatic pairing of Guy Picciotto and Ian MacKaye, with the latter's burgeoning artistry left fully untethered to conjure a work transcendent of post-hardcore or alternative rock. Mapping out the blueprint for punk and alternative music throughout the nineties, even predating the likes of Nirvana's 'Nevermind', or Pearl Jam's 'Ten'; few projects have stood the test of time or been cited as such an integral influence by a dynamic range of artists from Rage Against The Machine to The Dillinger Escape Plan to American Football. Aggressive, expansive and highly critical of issues still plaguing our world today, from drug abuse to greed and privatisation, the ethos of, 'Repeater', (quietly referencing The Beatles' 'Revolver') has only swollen with time.

Review: Boygenius is the collaborative project of Phoebe Bridgers, Julien Baker and Lucy Dacus, and 'The Record' is their next album, scheduled for March 2023. Combining pristine indie pop gloss with melancholic lyrics and experimental production, highlights such as 'Emily, I'm Sorry' amount to paeans for the death of relationships and braving extreme weather for the sake of love. Masterful harmonies dart and glide across each production mix, cementing the bandmembers' vocal abilities.

Review: Shoegaze legends Ride are on a reissuing roll, having announced a re-release campaign of almost all their early classic albums on Wichita Recordings. 'Nowhere', of course, is their magnum opus. Helicoptring in out from a tundric seascape and Hemingway hazes, Ride's sound is massive, sonically honest and remarkably different to some of their later works. In keeping with the iconic wave depicted on its front cover, this new vinyl reissue comes in the form of a blue 12" housed in a see-through inner sleeve.

Review: Jim Baron is a well-known DJ, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who co-founded Crazy P and who assumed new alias Jim for solo work back in 2021. His debut album Love Makes Magic is a superb mix of lush harmonic vocals, with funky back beats and a mix of organic brass and electronic synth sounds. It is music based around the work of the guitar but with plenty of sunny but eyed soul and subtle beach vibes that make it a gorgeous listen, especially as the days get longer and the sun that bit warmer.

Review: What began in Brussels on 7th July 1981 took Siouxsie Sioux and her Banshees across Europe for one of their most celebrated tours. Itself a precursor to extensive North American activities at the end of summer, the outfit would be on the road for the best part of half a year to support the landmark album Juju. A record that, among other things, features the anthemic 'Spellbound', which lends a lyric to the title of this incredible artefact from those shows.

Anyone who has been lucky enough to see the band in action will attest to the fact that, even in the twilight of their time together, the mid-1990s, they'd not waned one iota in terms of the impact, and the compulsion of everyone in the crowd to get locked in. That atmosphere is, to some extent, distilled onto this album, which gives some idea as to what their gigs sounded and felt like in the height of their glory.

Review: The year of 1985 is the absolute highpoint of The Cure's long illustrious career - they'd spent two years enjoying the fruit of their first Top 10 single, 'The Love Cats' and hit an incredible purple patch with the Head On The Door album, out that year, which seemed to effortlessly move their sound into pop territory without spoiling their trademark gothic emotional intensity. Hugely adept at dominating large spaces with their large sound - the 12,000 seater Birmingham NEC in this case - this catches a choice selection of tracks from the usual epic set list, spanning pop monsters like 'In Between Days' and 'Close To Me', synthpop-tinged delights like 'Screw', 'The Walk' and 'Let's Go To Bed' and the utterly doom laden 'A Forest' and 'The Hanging Garden'. A reminder of why they were - and continue to be - one of the biggest live draws the world of alternative music has ever produced.

Review: Are there many mixes as seminal as this one? When Soulwax adopted their 2 Many DJs alias for the landmark As Heard On Radio Soulwax series, they heralded a new era of genre-hopping, headsy blending that was fun and fearless in equal measure. It's absolutely of its time, capturing the electroclash zeitgeist and throwing in crowd-pleasing pop nous without diluting the product, and quite simply Pt 2 is one of the best party sets you're ever likely to hear. Released in 2002 and sounding as fresh and inspired as it did 20 years ago, this is an essential item for anyone who takes the art of the mash-up seriously.

Review: In 2015, Texas & London-based trio Khruangbin's debut album 'The Universe Smiles Upon You' garnered wide critical acclaim and captured attention for its seamless genre-blending and internationally shaped sound - one that evidently has deep roots in Thai-funk cassette culture. Similarly to their debut, sophomore record 'Con Todo El Mundo' is a cocktail of largely instrumental surf-rock, afro-funk, middle-eastern and far-eastern influences, mixed with warmth and soul. As if their pallette wasn't diverse enough, the additions of the pared back boogie on 'Evan Finds The Third Room', the widescreen dream-pop of 'A Hymn' and deeply intricate writing of closer 'Friday Morning', are illustrative of a band who have worked hard to broaden their horizons while keeping their roots in mind and, despite transatlantic bases, clearly remain a stunningly cohesive and well-matched outfit.

Review: Once Again We Are The Children Of The Sun is a compilation of rare and obscure psychedelic rock, folk and jazz from all over the world. While little thematic centrality is present, the common thread between these selections is that they can surely be classified as wheat, not chaff, thanks to the curatorial power of one Paul Hillery. Artists both known and forgotten, such as Forest, Will & James Ragar, Greg Foat Group and Orion all hitch a ride on Helios' sonic chariot, delivering an intense psych-folk-funk album of much experimentation and weird synthwork.
